BHRSD News + Notes

June 24, 2026

Dear BHRSD Community,

School may be out, but learning, adventure, and discovery are always in season. Summer vacation gives us the chance to recharge, discover new interests, and reconnect with the people and places we love. No matter where your adventures lead in the coming weeks, enjoy every moment of your well-earned break. We'll see you in the fall!

In this issue:

Spotlight on Marlow McManmon '28, intern at Papar Watches in Great Barrington

The small-but-mighty team at Papar Watches loves creating opportunities to work with young, local talent; this past year, sophomore Marlow McManmon fit the bill. Throughout the year, McManmon approached a wide range of creative projects spanning design, photography, and video. A willingness to try new things and the thoughtfulness with which he did so stood out to owner Emily Rosenberg-Blank. “Whether he was behind the camera, editing footage, or exploring design concepts, Marlow approached each project with curiosity, creativity, and an eagerness to learn,” she said, nodding to the value of one so willing to wear many hats and grow through the process. Marlow, we’re all excited to see where your creative path leads next.

DBM Represents in the Cradle of Liberty

Earlier this month, Du Bois Regional Middle School's eighth graders traveled to Philadelphia for a three-day capstone civics experience. Through visits to historic sites such as Independence Hall, students brought their classroom learning about the U.S. Constitution, the structure and function of the federal government, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens to life. Beyond deep educational value, the trip offers a meaningful opportunity for students to build lasting memories and celebrate the conclusion of their middle school years together—in the Birthplace of America, on the eve of the nation’s 250th birthday no less.

Chains & Wings: A Victory for Common Planning and Genuine Collegiality

When reflecting on the impact of English 12, senior Mari Brennan had a unique take. "The things we learned about this year are genuinely important and relevant to our lives right now in a way that I haven't felt about school before,” she said of the year-long thematic sequence developed by English department colleagues Jolyn Unruh and Michael Rosenthal. Anchored around a suite of texts which focused on the central theme of authoritarianism versus freedom, the curriculum challenged students to explore some of the most enduring questions of human experience: What makes a life meaningful? What values are worth defending? What responsibilities accompany freedom? Students' end-of-year reflections said it all: "I can't remember any previous English classes with so cohesive a theme,” wrote Robert Horner. Similarly, Dana Sanchez shared: "[The novels we read gave] me a better perspective on how to reflect on experience, [and] all the wonderful things that I have had the privilege to accomplish as a woman of color under the government we have."

Appreciating Doreen Twiss

I’d like to recognize my assistant, Dorreen Twiss, for her 40 years of service to BHRSD on the occasion of her retirement. Doreen is an exceptional person who does extraordinary work in supporting students and families, faculty and staff, the District as a whole—and me. From navigating complex policies and managing the intricate election process for our School Committee members to overseeing critical purchasing and vital job postings plus a million other things, Doreen is the steady hand guiding us all. Her deep knowledge of local history, family connections, and how it all comes together is a huge asset that we call on daily. Should you see Doreen on campus or around town this summer, please congratulate her for the impact she made over the course of her epic career and on her well-deserved retirement! Thanks, Doreen, for everything you’ve done; we will miss you!
